Research has shown that using your smart phone before you go to sleep can negatively affect your sleep and your brain’s health. Unfortunately, there is a large number of people who ignore the facts (myself included!) and continue to scroll, swipe and ‘like’ mere moments before hitting the sack.
Luckily, Facebook has rolled out its dark mode – a new feature that replaces its usual bright, white interface with black and shades of gray. According to TechRadar, this change is small but important. The darker interface promises to reduce glare while you are using the app after dark, which makes for a less stimulating and more relaxing social media experience. Bonus: Android users will find that enabling dark mode while using Facebook and other apps can extend your smart phone’s battery life.
Dark mode is already available for desktop and Android users. Moscoop.com shares a simple how-to on how to access the feature in this article. iPhone users, have no fear: You can use a similar option called ‘Night Shift.’ ‘Night Shift’ uses the clock and geolocation of your device to determine when it is sunset in your location. It then adjusts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the spectrum—making the display easier on your eyes.
Have you used Facebook’s Dark Mode or iPhone’s ‘Night Shift? Have these features helped you achieve a more restful sleep? We would love to hear your thoughts in a comment below!
